What is propolis?
Bees collect sticky resin from tree buds and bark, mix it with wax and their own secretions, and produce a fragrant golden-brown material. They use it to seal cracks in the hive, narrow the entrance in winter, and keep the crowded hive clean.
The name comes from Greek: "pro" means before, and "polis" means city. In other words, what stands before the city and protects it.
How is it traditionally used?
Propolis was already known in ancient Egypt and Greece. Traditionally it is used in skin care and for the mouth and throat. Today it is mostly sold as a tincture in drops, a throat spray, an ointment, or as part of skin care products. Its composition varies with the region and the plants the bees collected from, so quality also varies from product to product.
